Recently I was suckered into replacing the motor on this 500 due to the fact the previous one burned up because of the oils screen was plugged up. Anyway my buddy bought a used motor and the seller installed a new can once the motor was out of the quad. So the motor arrived at my home and like a good buddy I double checked the can installation. All appeared fine with the exception the timing was way off.
I also checked the valves and set them to .006 (lobes down dots up)the engine will start and it sounds good when I can get it to roll over that is. Using the pull rope it is very difficult to pull and the starter drags as in it doesn’t seem to have the torque required to turn this motor. With the clutch cover off at times its very hard for me to rotate the engine by hand.
I am assuming that the decompression valve may be the culprit however I don’t see anything wrong with it. I pulled it apart and it all appears fine. The ball bearing is in place and so is the mechanism.
Keep in mind that it sounds great when it fires up but I am at a loss as to what to look at next
