95 TRX 300 2×4 shift drum

I am trying to teach myself how to rebuild the engine all the way. I have the crankcase split, cleaned and my service manual open on an old crappy iPad for reassembly. I think I finally got the transmission installed in the proper sequence but the shift drum and shift forks are a BITCH to line up. Does anyone have a tip for making that easier? Does it matter what position the drum is in? I have to guess as long as all 3 shift forks are placed in order and aligned in the shift drum grooves that I have it done right??? Is that correct??

I get a sinking feeling that it’s "off" but all the gears turn smoothly…..is there a way to test ability to shift gears w/out putting half the engine back together??
