’87 350 Fourtrax, Fan question

I was riding along the other day and the oil temp light flashed it didnt remain on but periodically would come on.
I couldn’t be sure if the fan was running or not. I recently bought the machine and am learning. little by little.
Im thinking the fan should only come on if the temp reaches a certain level if the fan is being controlled by the controller. I know the fan works as I disconnected it from the what I think is the controller and put voltage to it and it turns and I can reverse polarity and it reverses.
Let ask this. If I bypass the controller and run power to it with a switch and use it when the light comes on or just run it all the time when Im riding will it draw too much from the battery or what kind of problem would that create?
I found a used unit (fan) and bought it and just put it on the shelf for now. I actually bought it before I checked out the fan on the machine. Also there is a clear plastic tube that lead up and into the headlamp for what ever reason. Ive got the front fender assembly off but still can’t see if the fan turns when the temp light come on. If I just run power to it should I polarize it to draw air to the cooler from in front or push air at the cooler from behind. any help with this sure make my day. I found controllers on line for about $50 but Im not even sure it (the one on the machine) is not working right and my wifes is raising an eyebrow if she raises two…
