replacing the final drive unit on my 84 due to the rear drum is cracked in 3 places and the brake cover is broken. while the drive side the bearings are shot. so picked up a good used unit and should have it today.

getting the axle out of the final drive.

removed the 2 nuts on the brake side. (downloaded the service manual) removed the spindle, and pulled the entire unit out of the quad. according to the service manual you can take a deadblow hit the axle shaft on the brake side and it will slide out.

this is not happing. the splines are rusted so far I have had to cut off what was left of the brake drum. got the brake housing off now am on the drive side and it is not going through still. splines are rusty here as well.

have heated with a propane torch and hit with airKroil. if it does not want to slide off tonight I am going to pull the cover off the drive side slide it out and cut the gear off of it.

before I go that far any idea?
