2012 Sportsman X2 – Problems starting when it’s cold

I’ve been dealing with this issue for quite sometime and I’m finally at a point where I would like to figure out what exactly is the problem.

It always happens when its below 15 degrees F or so and while I’m ice fishing.

A couple times over the years when I go to turn it on, I don’t hear the fuel pump kick on and then I know I am going to have trouble. All it will do is try turning over and never fire. This is probably happened about 4-5 times over the last 3 years or so when its really cold and normally windy. A few of the times I end up pushing it out of the wind and keep trying until randomly and thankfully it starts up. Other times it’s happened after hauling it home and I just push it off the trailer and into the heated garage where after a little while everything works perfectly.

Now yesterday, it was hovering around 0 so I hadn’t let it sit for probably more than 15 minutes and I went to try to start it, mostly out of curiosity if I was going to have trouble again. I turn the key on and the gear indicator shows ‘–‘. Naturally, it wouldn’t even turn over. Nothing. I tried rocking the unit, running the shifter up and down between gears, etc. I went even as far as taking the battery out, bringing it into the ice shack to warm up and then reinstalling it to see if that worked. I ended up having to push it to the shore line (luckily I was about as close to the vehicle as I’ve ever been) and then winching it back onto my trailer. Of course when I get home I go to push it off the trailer and boom, everything is back to normal and working perfectly. That part of the equation is what REALLY stumps me.

I’m at a loss. Any help would be much appreciated.
