2009 sportaman 500 snorkel shaft stripped.. Drill??

I recently bought a 2009 sportsman 500 awd from a guy who never greased the rear yoke. Not sure what or if anything else happened but the rear yoke on the drive shaft and the shaft coming out of the transmission are stripped. I was looking at drilling a hole through the shaft and the yoke like the front has and try that for a while to see how it works. I don’t use the 4×4 a lot and am not rough with the machine. My concern is: I believe the snorkel shaft is hardened steel and didnt know if I could successfully drill it. My other option is to pull the transmission and try to fix it myself. I am capable of pulling the tranny out but have no clue about splitting the transmission and replacing the shaft and the other gears that it’s connected too. Is this an easy task once the transmission is out? I’m alway the guy nervous about taking something apart and parts going everywhere and not knowing where they go. My first option is the one I’m seriously considering because of cost. A used transmission is in the $600 range and I’m sure the dealership would be in the $1000+ range to fix mine. That’s outta my budget. So, anyone ever drilled one or is this thing easy to take apart and fix??
