I’m new to the forum and have searched but can not find a solution. I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 800 EFI which is showing a low battery warning and the needle on my speedometer is blinking.
I have checked the battery and at rest it measures 12.6 and when running varies between 13.2 – 14.6 so it seems as though my charging system is working correctly. The battery was replaced about 1 year ago. The bezel on my speedometer was cracked so some moisture was able to get in however I have since dried it out and replaced the bezel to prevent further moisture issues.
When I go into diagnostic mode and check to see the battery voltage when running the display shows 2.6 to 2.8 even though my multimeter direct to the battery is measuring 13.2 – 14.6. Also I have noticed that my Trip Odometer seems to reset to 11.5 miles even though I reset it to zero and drive less than a few hundred feet.
Would moisture in the speedometer cause these symptoms or are the voltage readings and trip odometer milage performed by the computer? I don’t want to replace a $400 speedometer if it may not be the problem. Also if I end up needing to replace the speedometer does that effect the mileage displayed or is that number stored in the computer? If it does zero out is there a way to have it programmed to the correct mileage?
