2000 Recon making really bad noise when running….help

I have been noticing my 2000 Recon making a sound or two for a few weeks. Sounds like something not quite going into place after shifting (manual shift). Periodically while operating something would josel around and then fall into place (I think, it would stop making noise). I just added a new set of bear claws on it recently and today the sounds were much worse. Sounds vary from pin and bangs to scrapping and whining, it basically just sound horrible….

My quad is fully operable. I can shift into all 5 gears and reverse. Sounds are heard in all gears including reverse. When operating at speed, the banging is hard enough that I can feel it thru the frame of the bike. Sounds are not constant and appear independent of riding conditions. Do not believe it is engine related as can rev engine up in neutral an no sounds are heard.

Thinking it is transmission and/or rear end related. I have the correct oil (Honda Brand 40W) in engine with around 10 hours on it. I checked the rear end and my gear oil looked good (pervious owner has Mercurser Outdrive oil in it…its green).

I am looking for some advise on where to start trouble shooting my problem. Have a manual for bike, plan on memorizing it.
