1987 trx250 starting problems

Hey guys these forums have helped me out a bunch I’ve never had to make an account but I decided to do so. Anyway with my problems.

I just recently purchased a 1987 Honda trx250. Only reason I know what it is, is by the vin. I don’t know the sub model whether it’s an X or an R, what’s the difference? I’ve always had Yamaha’s so I’m not to familiar with Honda’s.

Next, I know it has been sitting for quite some time. It didn’t have any plastics on it. The breather box wasn’t hooked to the carb, new decompression lever, guy said it needed to be adjusted how do I do that?new igition coil, cdi, the rectifier looks original. It doesn’t have a igition switch at all, is it supposed to? Does have a kill switch. I’m trying to get it to start. So what I’ve done so far is I’ve taken the gas tank off and cleaned it, some nastiness came out of that, took the carb apart and cleaned it, checked the plug(new) for spark. Ended up shocking my girlfriend lmao. So when I kick it with some starter fluid it would start then shut right off. I’d give it some gas and it would sling the kicker back into me, with hurts like hell btw, now last night I got it to run twice. The first time I kept giving it throttle to ensure it stayed cranked rolled it out the shed and it shut off and wouldn’t crank back up. Kind of a piss off. So I rolled it back in the shed started messing with the fuel and got it to crank again. Put it in 1st and attempted to drive out. With the clutch in it would rev. When I would let the clutch out it would die. So I need a crash course on any info you guys may have about this thing. I am mechanically inclined but I’m no professional. I do most of my own work on my quads. So anything you guys may know to try please let me know. Thank you in advance!
