Hello everyone. I have two 1986 honda quads. One is a two wheel drive and the other is a four. Just recently changed the starters on both. The four wheeler now makes all kinds of ungodly clanking sounds and the two wheeler just sits there and spins without cranking. I took off the side covers on each to expose the gears involved with starting. Everything is turning as it should when the start button is depressed but the engine will not crank. All gears are where they are supposed to be. This isn’t brain surgery so I am at a loss to explain what’s going on. These are aftermarket starters but match the others gear and depth perfectly. Anybody have any ideas? The four wheeler starts but makes noise and occasionally will just sit there and spin the starter gears without cranking. The very same condition as the two wheeler but after hitting the start button repeatedly will eventually crank. Not so with the two wheeler. I can hold the start button for 10 minutes and it will just spin the starter gears without ever getting to the crank engine stage.
