Ok heres the scoop. Bought a 2010 sportsman 850xp about a month ago, has 350 miles and about 75 hrs on it. Person I bought it from mainly used it for plowing and around the house. Replaced the battery as it was bad and she ran good for a few days doing some trail riding for about 5 hrs a day. As I was riding the backlight for the display would sometimes cut out and back on and also the battery light would go on and off here and there but she still ran great. One day forgot to hook the battery tender on it and the next day I just got click click click and the battery was pretty drained just from one day. Charged everything up and Took it out for a spin today and was running great but then the backlight started goin on and off a bit and the battery light popped on again. continued riding for about 10 mins and saw smoke coming from under the front rack figured it was just some steam from the water we were riding thru since no overheating lights came on then realized it wasn’t . Before I could stop the machine it just cut out and died there was no display or anything. Took the front rack off and there was like smoke pissing out the sides of the battery and the battery was super hot. After that couldn’t turn the key and get any display just nothing. Figured the battery was fried so towed it back to the house took battery out and got a replacement. Also did a little looking into the fuses and saw the 10 unswitch fuse was burnt out so figured that’s why the display stopped working and what not. After doing some research it seems to me that it could be the voltage regulator causing my issues. I didn’t wanna hook anything back up without figuring the real problem of the backlight going out and the battery light keep coming on didn’t wanna fry anything. Basically just asking if you guys think its the voltage regulator causing the issues.
