Been a lurker here for a few months and first time poster. Also a first time Grizzly owner. So far my experience has not been going very well and I am trying to sort a few things out.
I could definitely use some help from some seasoned guys/gals on how to fix a couple issues I am having.
Background: Purchased a 2005 Yamaha Grizzly 660, 739 miles, 240 hours, about a month ago. Swapped out fluids in, rear diff, front diff, coolant, oil, oil filter, air filter and checked major components. Much the same as I would on the purchase of a used truck etc.
1st issue: I think I somehow filled the engine with too much oil, not really sure how since I followed the directions to a T, but I was riding in the neighborhood to make sure everything was running right and there was oil puking into my air intake box from the breather hose connected to it. I got her home and cleaned everything up, probably 1-2" of oil (smelled like gas as well) in the airbox, and then checked the oil. The oil level was at the brim ready to come out the filler tube (left side of engine while riding). I know 100% I did not put that much oil in it and when I checked after my oil change the oil level was perfect. So, I immediately drained the oil and this time filled it back up to where the level was just in the middle of the dipstick. After running it a 10-15 minutes the level is now at the top of the fill line and I haven’t done anything sense.
#1 Question: Did I possibly overfill it and is this why it was coming up the breather hose from the crankcase into the air box? If so, is this something that has happened to anyone else and should I be concerned with something more important here? I.E. what causes this?
2nd Issue: Now, my carburetor is leaking gas from the bottom outlet tube on the carburetor. Enough to where my entire garage smells like gas. I tried hitting it with a rubber mallet gently to see if I could free the float if that was the issue or free the seat and needle and it is still leaking gas. My fuel petcock (I think that’s its name) is set to OFF and it is still leaking fuel. So I turned it back on and revved the engine till all the fuel was used in the bowl and the engine stalled. I figured after this, there would be no more fuel in the carburetor bowl and no more fuel would be leaking. I came back 3-4 hours later, and NOPE! it is still leaking from the bottom of the carb.
#2 Question: Does it seem like my fuel petcock isn’t working? The engine did stall when it ran out of fuel in the OFF position… Do I need to rebuild the carb and replace the needle and seat? If so, is there a kit everyone recommends? OR should I just buy a new aftermarket carb for $70 and call it a day.
Last question I promise – if I already have the carb off the bike, do most of y’all upgrade Jets at that point? If so, and it’s a while you’re in there kinda thing, what jets should I upgrade to?
I really just want the bike to run and operate smoothly. So far it has been anything such.
Any and all help is appreciated and I greatly apologize for the long post.
