’05 300EX starter/solenoid issue

A friend and I were out riding recently and we stopped to rest for a bit. When we went to restart, his 300EX appeared to be completely dead. By all appearances, it was like the battery was disconnected. None of the lights or indicators worked and hitting the start button did nothing.

We poked around and the battery connections seemed secure, and when we were checking around the starter we discovered it was extremely hot.

About 5-10 minutes later while we started looking at the trailmap to figure out the best way to tow out to a service road, the quad came back to life and started up. Everything seemed to be operating correctly.

This happened again later on, but it came back to life much quicker… within a minute or two.

Does this sound like the solenoid not disengaging or something else… relay or starter button switching?

thanks,
dave
