Wheel Bearings – Yes / No?

Hello All-

I’ve a 2013 900XP-4 with 1397 miles. I just completed my annual full service – all fluids, filters, grease, grease all shock mounts, di-electric all electrical connections, check brakes, coolant, brake fluid, etc. The machine remains in tip top condition at all times.

While checking over everything, I tested the wheel bearings by grabbing each wheel at 12/6 and 9/3 while on the lift. The front seemed tight and the rear had a slight amount of play. Since I have no reference to know what level of play is acceptable or normal, I don’t know if they need replacement.

I took it to my dealer today to ask their opinion… would you believe they said it needs all 4 wheel bearings and they want ~$600 to change them?

I’m skeptical. At the same time, we’re planning on a ~750mi ride in Utah in early September and I don’t want to be the guy broken down on the trail.

I am a reasonably capable / mechanical guy. I just don’t have direct experience with these bearings. Can anyone suggest a way to gauge the need for replacement?

BTW- I had a 2004 Yamaha Rhino with ~9k miles on it and I never changed the bearings. Why do the RZR’s seem to need them so frequently?

Thanks in advance,

Matt
