Wayne National Forest Ohio ride, firearms optional?

Was planning on doing my maiden trip to Wayne National Forest this weekend. A business aquatance lives about 10 miles from there….part time farmer. He strongly suggested at least one member of my group bring a firearm (suggest multiple times, this guys is a laid back, good old county boy) Said there are some locals down there that are your typical thieves…cowards if you put up any backbone. He just got his concealed carry permit for Ohio. Said its a different world now-a-days. He’s about 6-2, 275 lbs, resident to the area whole life, late 40’s.

This got me thinking…..was planning on riding with my 15 year old daughter. Planned to stick to the trails. Would I be putting ourselves in too great of risk?

So how many folks consider a pistol standard gear for biking trips? Is it time my opinions change with the times. Alone and lost in the woods…could be recipe for trouble? never really thought about it.

Live in a large city. There are places I just don’t go…period. If I had to go there would be packing and still likely to have trouble. That’s just life. In the woods, stumble on a meth lab, 3 or more meatheads vs me and the daughter, not good odds.

What do you all do? I usually carry pepper spray for dogs and such. Maybe time to upgrade.
