Was planning on doing my maiden trip to Wayne National Forest this weekend. A business aquatance lives about 10 miles from there….part time farmer. He strongly suggested at least one member of my group bring a firearm (suggest multiple times, this guys is a laid back, good old county boy) Said there are some locals down there that are your typical thieves…cowards if you put up any backbone. He just got his concealed carry permit for Ohio. Said its a different world now-a-days. He’s about 6-2, 275 lbs, resident to the area whole life, late 40’s.
This got me thinking…..was planning on riding with my 15 year old daughter. Planned to stick to the trails. Would I be putting ourselves in too great of risk?
So how many folks consider a pistol standard gear for biking trips? Is it time my opinions change with the times. Alone and lost in the woods…could be recipe for trouble? never really thought about it.
Live in a large city. There are places I just don’t go…period. If I had to go there would be packing and still likely to have trouble. That’s just life. In the woods, stumble on a meth lab, 3 or more meatheads vs me and the daughter, not good odds.
What do you all do? I usually carry pepper spray for dogs and such. Maybe time to upgrade.
hello all my South Texas Amigos. we (my wife and I) are dying to take our new 4 wheelers out for some fun. we was kind of of thing about going to down south off road park this weekend. it would be our first time there infact it will be out first time going to a atv park period. I was wandering if any of you have ever been there? what is it like and what do I need to know? it has been raining a lot here off and on the last 3 weeks but it is done raining the rest of the week so it should dry out some. thanks in advance for any input.
like the title says is there any places to ride in Houston and Galveston area that I might be able to play an hour or two after work? I know there are a few places to pay and spend the day but I am talking about places like along a creek that you might park at a Walmart then ride beside it along a trail to some hills or something? I live in a city were they are just looking for you to enter the street and ticket you so right now they are parked in the garage until we can go play. when I was young and rode YZ 250s there was trails everywhere but now that I am an old fart I don’t know of any.
Here’s an incredibly disturbing letter from the Resource Management Supervisor of MNR Bracebridge Field Office sent to HATVA’s associate Lake of Bays ATV club (LOB). Basically, in Ms. Collins opinion there are no bush trails on any of the Crown lands that have been used and signed by the LOB club. If this letter reflects the Minister’s stance it spells the end of ATVing in Ontario. LOB was told all lumber roads, including overgrown ones, are considered Highways and ATV use is prohibited; if a trail appears on any map it is considered a road. LOB now has no trails.
If this insanity spreads there will be no where to ride in Northern Ontario and will shut down many of the southern Ontario clubs. For example, HATVA’s 1700 km of bush trails (with the exception of the Rail Trails and a few private properties) all fall on Crown land.
In April 2013 LOB received a letter from the MNR office allowing them to place trail signage, now the same office wants the signs removed. HATVA feels trail signage is necessary, not only to identify the route where you are travelling but also to identify position in the event of emergencies.
We can only hope the long awaited changes Highway Traffic Act will clarify exactly what is considered a highway. Until then I suppose it’s okay to weave through the trees on Crown land as long as you’re not leaving a trail behind you. In this matter, I suspect someone has made a decision far above their pay grade.
