Official dune helmet thread

Hello fellow duners!

I thought this would be an informative thread for those who are in the market for helmets to use in the dunes now that it’s a requirement in California.

Initially, I was an opponent of the new law, and somewhat still am. While wearing helmets is a smart move, personally I’d rather not be told that I have to. On bikes and quads helmets are a no brainer, but in a roll cage equiped vehicle it would be nice to have a choice!

Heres what I have experienced since I began wearing helmets in the dunes—–

For the last two seasons I have been wearing my carbon fiber full face Simpson Devil Ray race helmet with communications, and fresh air pumper. Paint by CR Designs, comms by PCI Race Radios.

Pros –
– Installed speakers and mic for comms and music
– With a helmet skirt, and pumper on I havent had sand in my face, ears, or eyes once
– Lightweight
– Full face protection makes it very safe
– Warm on cold nights

Cons –
– Limits visibility slightly
– Hot on hot days
– Hard to wear sun glasses (harder to store sunglasses while riding without damaging them)
– Difficult to communicate with friends while pulled over or stopped
– Rashes cheeks and ears due to the amount of times you take helmet on and off

These cons are enough for me to try another helmet for this season. Looking at open face helmets w/ comms, looking at half shell helmets for those quick rides from camp to camp, also looking at motocross helmets.

Please post photos or links to what helmets you use, and share what you do, or do not like about them! :rzrflag:

First time to Glamis for thanksgiving ’15

Planning a trip out for thanksgiving weekend and trying to be as prepared as possible. Any info you all can share would be appreciated.

I was told parking around the beach store would be a good spot. Is there a charge for that? How quickly will it fill up? We’ve got a crew of at least four RV’s hoping to get there sometime Wednesday the day before thanksgiving. Will we have room to park?

How is the partying in that area? We’ve got some kiddos with us.

Is there anyone who comes around and services your RV? Like empties black/grey water and fills fresh? Hoping we won’t need it, but like to be prepared.

Again, anything that’s important I’m missing, I’m all ears!!

Thanks in advance!

Paddle tire pressure CA vs OR?

Been riding my XP4-1K on stock tires since new (1.5 yrs) and a just bought a paddles, Scat Track 12-paddle sliders (staggered). Correct size/rollout (did a lot of reading). My first set of paddles – super stoked!

Any of you ride in Glamis and Oregon Dunes? Do you run the same tire pressure at both places?

Shocks before Sand Tires?

Ok so when I bought my RzR I was thinking San Tires First. But after driving it around last weekend I had more problems bottoming out than I did with the stock tires.

So that has me thinking to have the suspension re-worked before I get sand tires? It would be nice to be a little wider though.

SENATE COMPANION LEGISLATION INTRODUCED TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE SAFETY STANDARDS FOR SIDE-BY-SIDES
Back in February we asked you to encourage your representatives to co-sponsor H.R. 999. Your efforts have paid off in the House as we are now closing in on 50 Co-Sponsors! Now we are asking you to do the same for a sister bill that has been introduced in the Senate. "This is part of our ongoing efforts to postpone the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s mandatory product standards on Recreational Off-Highway Vehicles that could make them unsafe in our riding environment," stated ASA Executive Director Nicole Nicholas Gilles. "This bill will require leading experts in the field to weigh in on this important issue."
Senators Dean Heller (R-NV) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) have introduced bipartisan companion legislation to H.R. 999 that would require the National Academy of Sciences to conduct a study about the appropriateness of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) moving forward with its mandatory product standards for recreational off-highway vehicles (ROV’s or side-by-sides). Specifically, this study would determine the technical validity of CPSC’s proposed lateral stability and vehicle handling requirements; the number of ROV rollovers that would be prevented if the rule were adopted; whether there is a technical basis for the proposal to provide information on a vehicle’s rollover resistance on a progressive scale; and the effects on the utility of ROVs used by the U.S. military if the rule were adopted.
Please send an email urging your Senators to co-sponsor this common-sense legislation which will simply ensure that there is an adequate study of the impacts of CPSC’s proposed rule before it’s too late!
We are once again partnering with our friends at ARRA (Americans for Responsible Recreational Access) who makes it easy for you to contact your elected officials. Your action today can help get the ball rolling in the Senate!

Really too hot?

A group of us are in Oregon and WA State, we ride the dunes (up here) a lot and every chance we get. Have been doing so for many years. The only time we can all take enough time off to make a Glamis trip is in August. Is it really actually too hot to ride during the day at that time of year?

Riding bikes and XP-1000’s.
