Welp here’s my next three questions to help get me into my first machine (looking to buy used btw)…
1) I’m hooked on the camo color scheme but don’t want to let that stop me from getting into a good bike. Say you had something like a red or green 2010 Grizz 550 and wanted to turn it camo. How would you go about that? Buy all the plastic off ebay and sell what comes off yours to recoup some of the cost? Or is there some kind of plastic or material cover you could get? Also, about how much would each route end up costing?
2) I’ve seen the back end of some machines that look like they’re just not set up to handle a hitch ball. Are there some machines that you can’t put a ball on at all, or are there aftermarket conversion kits made for every machine out there?
3) Same question for winches. I’ve seen some Grizz front ends that, either because of the molding or frame, just don’t look like they’d take a winch. Am I right, or will all bikes (or at lease all Grizzlys) be able to accept an aftermarket winch kit?
Maybe it’s just me, but there sure seems to be a TON of spam posts on this forum. I belong to my fair share of forums, and have never seen anywhere near the amount of spam as this one gets. Don’t get me wrong… It’s certainly not gonna scare me away from here, but it is rather annoying.
OK, I gotta ask the question. What is it with all the bogus threads that are showing up?? Is their purpose just to annoy us (if so, I guess you would have to say they are being successful).
I know that nobody reply’s on them (thank you all), hell I don’t even open then if they look like they’re bogus, so they disappear pretty quick, I just don’t see what there purpose is for. Does anybody???
Here’s the deal… I’m a first time atv buyer and have been studying hard all aspects of buying and evaluating these things for a used purchase. Now after months of looking everywhere I finally found a local private seller through word of mouth that may be offering a hell of a deal. Story is…
Guy’s got a 2012 Yamaha Griz 550 w/ EPS with 2900 miles and 250 hours on it and hes asking $4900. Says he got it from NPA? in Cincinnati for $4400 and paid $125 to ship it. After new tires, brakes and oil he says he’s got $5000 into it coming from a dealer-only wholesale auction. I’ve only got $4500 to spend and really stressed that and he says he’ll sell it to me if the guy coming on Friday doesn’t pay the full $4900 price he’s asking.
So yeah fairly excited about the prospects here. This one blue books for something like $5500-$5800 retail.
But I’m still a little too wet behind the ears still to be confident about evaluating these things used so I’m cramming as much info as I can before I go take a look at it. So don’t want to get burned.
So couple questions…
1- I’ve seen some with more and less miles than the 2900 this one has. But have been taught it’s not so much the mileage as how they were put on. Anyone have insight about this specific model with almost 3000 miles and 250 hours on it?
2- Are there any special problems the 2012 550 EPS Griz has that I should be looking out for?

Hi all. New to the page but been dreaming of getting the can am xmx450 since can am announced they’re back. So now after roughly 5-6 years I’m finally in the market for one I can’t seem to find one at all anywhere near California. I’ve tried to figure out Can Ams website but not much help at all there. So I’m wondering if it’s been a common issue or it’s just me and I understand there most likely won’t be a 2016 model. So I’m frustrated and a bit lost needing experienced voices to guide me to my new quad. I previously had a cannondale glamis 450 that I absolutely loved just hated constantly turning wrench on it and parts were difficult at best. Help
Ok another three questions to help me get up to speed on getting my first ATV…
1- It’s after the court clerk has closed and you’re standing there with the guy after your test drive and you’ve decided you really want the machine he’s selling, and if you don’t put cash in his hand now it might be gone tomorrow. So how do you know there’s not a lien on the title or that the machine is even his? Just wondering how you go about purchasing a machine and make sure you don’t get ripped off somehow title wise.
2- How much do private parties generally come off their asking price if they haven’t put something like ‘FIRM’ in their advertisement? Also, how much do dealerships generally come off their price?
3- I’ve been told to stay away from ten year old Polaris from a number of different people, but that they’ve come a long way since then. How old is the oldest Polaris I should consider buying used? Around when did they start to improve in quality?
Educating myself getting ready to buy my first 4×4 and have some questions.
1 – Engine size. One of my wants is to be able to pull a trailer up a trail with a decent amount of camping gear piled in, so I’ve been told to either look for a good size motor or one with hi-lo gears. From what I’ve learned so far it seems that something like a Sportsman 500 HO or 550 Griz would do that job fairly well. But for the sake of opening up my options could I possibly look into a smaller engine than these if it had hi-lo? Put another way…what’s the smallest engine size I should be looking for on a machine that has hi-lo considering my pulling needs?
2 – Can add power steering? Is it possible to add power steering to a model that didn’t come with it, but other versions of that same year’s model did? For example some of the 2008 Griz 550s came with PS and some didn’t. If I found one that didn’t have it could I reasonably assume I could add it later considering the frame and equipment has probably already been designed to work with it?
3- Mileage and age. Most of the machines I’m seeing have between 500-1200 or so miles and I’m wondering how many is too many? Seen some with 2-3000+ and I’m most def staying away from those. But whats the mileage limit where you can expect major things (read expensive) to start going wrong with the machine? I’ve heard someone generally speaking say they would rather take a 2006 with 1000 miles on it vs a 2012 with 2000. Would most people agree?
