Just bought a 1998 Polaris Sportsman 400

I thought I’d wait till I actually owned a Polaris before introducing my self. 64 year old retired boatbuilder from Maine. Today I bought a 1998 Sportsman 400 in pretty good shape and only 1,300 miles, owned by a geezer like me. It’s been kept in a garage or barn all it’s life. It has a 2 stroke and it’s an automatic shift. Thought it would be a good starter for my wife, as she doesn’t want to shift my Arctic Cat 500 manual, plus the Arctic Cat is pretty big for her, she rides in the 2 up back seat now. So, I kept it made in the USA, like my old Arctic Cat. All my friends drive Hondas, but they don’t impress me.

Battery question… HELP!

I bought a 425 with a bad battery; replacement ordered and in hand, I hooked up the positive, then the negative- got a healthy spark/arc. This is not right, is it? Double checked that nothing id on and no added wiring to cause problem. I don’t want to wreck my new gell battery, so HELP!

OK…So I’ve Had A Few Setbacks…

Greetings from New Brunswick, Canada! I’ll briefly bring y’all up to date. I bought my 2005 Sportsman 600 new and enjoyed every minute of every ride right up ’til the engine death after the Flood of 2012. I was devastated to loose such a faithful ride and missed her dearly! I considered a rebuild but kept putting it off, hoping to find a replacement engine while quietly storing her in my garage. Then a month ago, almost 3 years later, there was an ad on Kijiji that caught my eye- parting out an ’03 Sportsman 700! I jumped on that, let me tell ya!
I took quite a gamble as the 700 wasn’t running and had sat for a while with very little compression and rust in places you don’t want it to be. There were times during the rescue-swap that I really wondered what I’d gotten myself into and if I was chasing false hopes!! The only thing I didn’t do was give up and after a lot of TLC I was ready to hit the start button. Well… as soon as it got fuel, it fired right up, no lifter noise, no bearing noise, just sat there and idled away!:lmao:
After a few oil changes and some fine tuning I got to go for my first ride after nearly 3 years of waiting… it wasn’t ’til I got back that I realized that the water from my eyes wasn’t from the wind:biglaugh:

Hello

Hi, i’m from italy and i bought some months ago a Polaris Sportsman 500 EBS year 2000. I came here to learn something new on atv’s world

New Guy Here

Hi. I’m new to Polaris and new to ATV’s. I just bought a 2006 Sportsman 500 HO for use on our deer lease. I’ll probably be asking some dumb questions now and then.

New Polaris owner from Pittsburgh!

Hey! My name’s Bill, glad to be here. New to the ATV scene, but been working with small engines for decades. I have a small repair shop and a mower/tractor junkyard, so I’m familiar with working on equipment. Interesting, quads are very similar in lots of ways, but very different in others. I’ve owned Mini bikes, go-carts, motorcycles, thousands of mowers and tractors, but no ATVs. Last month I worked on a guy’s tractor. He asks me: "You wanna trade the 2 hours of labor for a pair of old quads?" Couldn’t say no! So I end up with a 1990 Trail boss 250 4×4 – complete, but the head’s off and in a box. Also a 1992 Yamaha Timberwolf 250 4×2 – also complete. Both rough from a few years of sitting, but savable for sure. The Yamaha didn’t take much – carb cleaning, cables, etc. Still a work in progress – it’s my busy season with mowers and such. But I keep looking at the Polaris, thinking how cool it looks, looking forward to spending time on it. In the meantime, I decide to sell a project car of mine- a 1994 Camaro. Nice car, but needs lots of work, l listed it on Craigslist for 799. That day, I guy offers to trade for a 2000 Trail Boss 325. Long story short – https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net…46&oe=56235325
Clean, runs and drives excellent, just needs a new chain and sprocket (one tooth missing, they’re on their way from Ebay). Loving the quality of the build on these Polaris’s, I’ve always admired their equipment. My only complaint so far – lack of info. The Yamaha – anything I needed, just a pdf away. So far, nothing for the Trail Boss but a 3 page service manual supplement. Would love to find an owners manual and service manual so I can start with basic maintenance like fluid changes, lubrication, etc. So I’m here to learn – seems like you guys (and gals!) really know your stuff. Looking forward to owning my new Polaris (and getting his older brother fixed up too). First off – any links to owners or service manuals? I’ll post my next questions in the appropriate areas. Thanks a lot in advance!
