I’ve had a sports quad for a few years (Raptor 250), but wanted to get something to carry my chainsaw gear, and pull a small trailer in to the woods so got this:
It’s a sportsman 850 EPS (but you knew that already!)
It came with rear box, front winch and spotts, heated grips and throttle.
Had a few bits to do, added mirrors, sorted brake lights (dodgy connection under front rack), wobbly headlight (one of the tags had broken off, which I’ve glued and reinforced with metal plate). Just now need to mount a front number plate to get it through its annual road test (MOT), and rear number plate lights.
I didn’t get an owners manual with it, so downloaded one from Polaris, however the 2010 manual didn’t seem to match, my battery is under the front rack, but manual says under seat. Had to go a year or two forward to get one that looks like it matches – anyone any ideas? It’s got French warning stickers if that makes any difference. I’m also after a workshop manual if anyone has any pointers please?
Finally I noticed a rubber piece under the small rear trunk/boot thing.. I had a fiddle and found some bits of what looks like CVT belt – so guess it failed at some point. The bit I can’t figure out is that rubber piece looks like it should connect to the CVT exhaust, however it doesn’t quite reach or look like it actually fits:
Is it meant to be joined somehow? If not, then the rubber is just blocking the vent to some extent which is a bit silly.
Can’t wait to get the road test done, then I can go out and play 🙂

2013 Polaris SPORTSMAN 500 HO
Got asked to help with this machine. Just clickes when key is turned. They were told it was probably the brushes.Took the starter out, everything looked good, put it back. So starter cables where off and took cables off where they go to frame ground, no corrosion, put back. Read on forum, probably the battery. Put on charger over night, said it was bad. Put on another charger over night, said it was good. Put back in, still clicks. They purchased a new battery, still clicks. The clicking is coming from unit mounted on the frame right in front of the battery box. Is this a starter relay? I was told it just stopped running. I wondered about a fuse?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I’ve been lurking for a while, but figured it was time to drop in and say hi. I have a 2015 Sportsman 570 in camo, and I just put on my new silverback x-lites/ss212s today.
New to the forum. I have been on a 2007 Yamaha Grizzly eps for the last few years. That wheeler has been great. It has just under 8000 miles on it.
It was time for a upgrade and I wanted to try something with more power. Here is what I got. It’s a 2015 Sportsman 850 SP.
50y/o dad here trying to get a good quad for my kids and I – well……bought a used 2000 sportsman – mistake so far…….guy said starter/switch was just wiggy……uh no…..
I managed to fix switch by taking apart and going through little springs/copper connectors/ball bearings/and cleaned then added dielectric….works fine…..starter wont roll engine when gets on compression stroke – I can barely pull with both hands to roll it past then it starts fine – I put a car battery on it and it still wouldn’t roll it over just made the cables hotter!!!
so I read this forum/google – seems these 500s have issues with compression release system on cam and wearing out exhaust cam lobes – sure enough I tore it apart and well…….for starters mine has a chip of the shinny plating on exhaust rocker where the little ball bearing gadget runs that does the compression release ( I believe ) so I know I am going to need an exhaust rocker at the least.
Next my dilemma,
1) is there a way to test the ball bearing thing in the cam to make sure it works before I reassemble. The exhaust lobe doesn’t look worn/bad but at this point and all the stuff strung all over my barn, im a little apprehensive about going back together w/out good stuff inside not to mention ruining a good gasket set because of old parts.
2) any recommendations for replacement cam/rocker combos brands? I see several on ebay but I don’t want to buy some junk only to have another failure. I didn’t buy this with anticipation of having to tear the engine apart.
3) should I hone the cylinder and rering the piston? I have no clue on the hours/miles on the unit, I would say it looks average for a 15y/o machine. Nothing great but not trashed.
4) Did I mention I have this thing in a bunch of pieces all over my barn and no proper tools or knowledge to put it back together such as timing it, torqueing things down to spec, no torque wrench, etc…….is there anyone in the KC area that might be willing to allow me to pay them for some repairs once I get parts and get ready to go back together with it?
My mom and dad own two Kawasaki bayous and a mule……..they have ALL been fool proof, no engine probs and one is 10 years older than this Polaris…..are they a lesser machine? I got this Polaris because of a recommendation of a friend and the fact it was a reasonable deal and 4×4 which my parents bayous are not. I am kinda wishin I hadn’t but hopefully after engine work it wont need so much.
Thanks in advance regarding help/recommendations – I look forward to your responses so I can figure out what to do. I am totally overwhelmed.
I finally bought my own atv , ive rode quite a bit over the years but never had my own. I bought a 2015 polaris sportsman 570 indy red no bells and whistles. Im about 5 hrs into the break in peroid and probably being to careful . I love it , alot of low end power and just notice the normal complaints. My goal is to get a plow before winter and get some trail riding in .
