Hello fellow Polaris owners. I’m a NYer that relocated to NC almost 20 years ago. Started riding ATVs in 2005 and have gone thru a few.
Yamaha Bruin, Polaris Sportsman 700, Yamaha Kodiak 450, Arctic TRV 500, Polaris RZR 570, Kawasaki Teryx 800, and now I’m back on a Sportsman 570.
I liked the SXS’s, but really missed the ATV experience. I ride mostly in WV on the Hatfiled-McCoy trails. I’ve also ridden the Spearhead trails in Virginia, Harlan County / Black Mountain in Kentucky, Windrock in Tennessee, Carolina Adventure World in South Carolina, Mines & Meadows in Pennsylvania, Tug Hill in New York, Berlin ATV Trails in New Hampshire, and pretty much everything in North Carolina. I’d love to head west and ride the Piaute trails.
I’ve made a lot of friends on the trails and look forward to making many more.
Hello. I’m as new as they come to this forum but have been a Polaris fan for years, owning snowmobiles and a couple different atv’s. My most recent purchase is a 2015 sunset red 570 sp. I gotta tell ya, I love this bike. The ride is increddible and I love the power steering. The engine braking is a bit much at low speeds but I’m getting used to it. The only issue I have is a bang type noise when starting off from a start, either forward or reverse. I first heard the noise when loading my new bike at the dealer. I just wrote it off as clutch noise but I think it’s getting worst. I spoke to the dealer and he tells me it is normal drive chain noise that will go away or greatly diminish after break-in. He says that the chain in the case is on an auto tensioner and when the chain stretches through normal break-in it will eventually allow the auto tensioner to move to the next notch and take up the slack. Anyone ever heard of this? The noise is quite loud on heavy take off and almost gone on slow take off. I can make it happen on demand. I do notice that sometimes when it bangs going forward, I have to drive in reverse before it will ban again. I think I also hear it on decell at times as well. It is quite loud and Im afraid something is going to break. The bike has just under 100 miles. Your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated.

Hello, I thought I finally should register to the forum instead of being here as a guest. Im sorry If my english isnt so good but I will try my best.. 😉
Well, I live in Sweden and im 17 years old.
Started driving ATV when my parents bought me a Loncin 250 chinese ATV. I was really pleased with it in the beginning but I quickly grew out of it.
Have driven a Polaris Sportsman 500 -13 the past two years.
Couldnt be any happier with it. (Well ofc power steering and fuel injection would be nice…)
I hope that I can find alot more useful things on this forum then I already have found. 🙂
I have just purchased a 2006 Sportsman 450 not to long ago with about 2500 miles on it. The original owner said they had issues with it taking in water and numerous starter issues. I purchased it not running as the starter and the recoil were both rusted up (seized) but was guaranteed it was a good runner when it did run.
Found out the main issue with the water getting in and freezing the starter and recoil was this: whoever replaced the starter last time did not use a gasket or gasket maker when putting the recoil cover back on. I took it off and it was full of water. He admitted to burying it in the swamp before it had the latest issues with the starter. So I cleaned it up and put a new starter and bendix drive in, and fixed the recoil. I also put gasket maker around the cover seal and bolts. I will eventually get a proper gasket.
I flushed and changed all fluids, bought a UNI filter, put a light mod in, and it ran good for a few runs. Then I started having a false overheat warning and the fan would not turn off until the battery was disconnected. Found the problem was it had the original Chinese black box PDM that was recalled. So I bought a new one and problem solved. I plan to get the local Polaris dealer to replace this old one for a spare due to the recall, and also because I heard this new silver one has internal corrosion problems. I think the back on it (which comes off with two screws) must allow moisture to get inside. I plan to silicone seal it up to hopefully avoid this issue.
Replaced all brakes as they were squeaky. The primary clutch has full EBS, and it makes some noise when slowing, so I plan to rebuild and tune the clutches to get more power speed and a better jump off the line. I think it may need a front U-joint or joints too. The front pumpkin was replaced once and it is flushed out and have new demand drive in it.
I am also replacing the fuel pump, rebuilding and re-jetting the carb with a kit, and also need to find a better exhaust system. Since I plan to mud a little with it, I do not want to modify or remove the air box at this time.
Anyway just thought I would say hey and that I will probably ask a few questions on carb tuning and clutch modding in the near future. Thanks for being here!
Hey guy’s new to the site figure I would share a new sportsman 850 sp story
Purchased in June I rode with no problems for the first 25 hrs or first service. Then shifting started to get harder and harder, turned out to be faulty primary clutch from factory, it kept changing the belt alignment which in turn destroyed the belt. Polaris replaced the clutch under warranty but not the belt even though they admitted the faulty clutch destroyed it do to alignment.
Fast fwd to the next weekend of riding, trails all weekend, perfect weather, rode for four days straight.
When I get home I always do a maintenance routine, wash, wax, lube. After giving each wheel a good shake I noticed the right rear with access play, turns out the a arm bushings are toast, the same a arm bushings I grease after every ride!!
Here’s where it gets better noise coming from the cv or diff probably due to loose a arm? I can’t say I’m pleased so could somebody tell me I bought the right quad.
I’ve put over 10000 miles on polaris quads before I bought this new one but my confidence and embarrassment in promoting polaris on the trails is getting to rattle me.
By the way I’m a 40 year old that doesn’t beat his equipment anymore just hanging with the guys running technical trails in low range

Can anyone tell me if the front differential on an 02 700 sportsman is exactly the same as an 04 700 sportsman. I cracked the diff case and only need the right half of the cast. There is one for sale on ebay but don’t wanna put out the $125 only to find out that aren’t the same. Thanks for your help!

I’ve had a sports quad for a few years (Raptor 250), but wanted to get something to carry my chainsaw gear, and pull a small trailer in to the woods so got this:
It’s a sportsman 850 EPS (but you knew that already!)
It came with rear box, front winch and spotts, heated grips and throttle.
Had a few bits to do, added mirrors, sorted brake lights (dodgy connection under front rack), wobbly headlight (one of the tags had broken off, which I’ve glued and reinforced with metal plate). Just now need to mount a front number plate to get it through its annual road test (MOT), and rear number plate lights.
I didn’t get an owners manual with it, so downloaded one from Polaris, however the 2010 manual didn’t seem to match, my battery is under the front rack, but manual says under seat. Had to go a year or two forward to get one that looks like it matches – anyone any ideas? It’s got French warning stickers if that makes any difference. I’m also after a workshop manual if anyone has any pointers please?
Finally I noticed a rubber piece under the small rear trunk/boot thing.. I had a fiddle and found some bits of what looks like CVT belt – so guess it failed at some point. The bit I can’t figure out is that rubber piece looks like it should connect to the CVT exhaust, however it doesn’t quite reach or look like it actually fits:
Is it meant to be joined somehow? If not, then the rubber is just blocking the vent to some extent which is a bit silly.
Can’t wait to get the road test done, then I can go out and play 🙂
